It covers entity clarity (making sure the facts about your business are consistent everywhere an AI might read them), content structure (writing in a way that's easy to extract and quote) and crawler access (confirming AI bots can actually reach your pages).

SEO optimises for a ranked list of blue links on a results page. GEO optimises for being pulled into a generated answer, often with no click required. The mechanics differ: ranking algorithms weigh backlinks and keyword relevance heavily, while generative retrieval weighs entity consistency, passage-level clarity and whether a source can be quoted without ambiguity. The two overlap (both reward genuinely useful, well-structured content) but the specific signals you optimise for are not identical.

A meaningful share of informational and comparison searches now get answered directly inside the AI interface, with the user never reaching a results page or a website. If your entity data is inconsistent or your content isn't structured for extraction, you simply don't exist in that answer, no matter how strong your traditional rankings are. The businesses building citation-readiness now are the ones these systems will keep defaulting to as their retrieval patterns stabilise.
