Where answers appear

The answer surfaces we optimise for

01
Featured Snippets
The highlighted answer box at the top of Google results — the most valuable organic position.
02
People Also Ask
The expandable Q&A clusters that appear mid-results and drive secondary visibility.
03
Voice Search
Voice assistants read featured snippets aloud — answer-first content is what gets chosen.
04
AI Overviews
Google's AI-generated answers draw from well-structured, authoritative content — just like snippets.

The advantage

Search increasingly answers questions directly. If your content isn't structured for it, you're skipped entirely.

Our Process

How we build answer authority.

Question Research

Question Research
Our approach

How we structure content for answers

01
Answer first, context second
Google's featured snippet algorithm and voice assistants both extract a short passage that directly answers the query, usually the first sentence or two of the containing element. Pages that open with throat-clearing or a general introduction before getting to the point rarely win that placement, however good the eventual answer is. We restructure the opening of each target page so the direct answer comes first and the supporting explanation, caveats and detail follow after.
02
Real questions, not keyword stuffing
We start from actual question data (People Also Ask clusters, autocomplete suggestions, voice-search phrasing, and questions pulled from your own sales calls and support tickets) rather than working backward from a keyword list. Question-format content built this way tends to match how people actually phrase queries to a voice assistant or a chat interface, which is a different pattern from typed keyword searches.
03
Schema that helps engines extract
FAQ schema, HowTo schema and Article markup don't change how your page ranks on their own, but they do give search engines an unambiguous, structured version of content that's already visible on the page, which reduces the parsing work the engine has to do to confidently extract and surface an answer. We only mark up FAQs and steps that are genuinely shown to the visitor, in line with search engine guidelines.
04
AEO supports GEO
The same discipline, answer stated plainly, self-contained, factually precise, that wins a featured snippet is also what a language model looks for when deciding what to cite in a generative answer. Content built for AEO tends to perform well for GEO with little extra work, so we build the two together rather than as separate workstreams.
05
Voice search has its own phrasing patterns
Voice queries skew conversational and longer than typed searches ('what's the best way to...' rather than a bare keyword), and voice assistants generally read out a single answer rather than a list of options. We write and structure answer content with this conversational phrasing in mind, since a page optimised only for short typed keywords can miss voice-driven traffic entirely.

AEO-Optimised Content vs Generic Content

The structure of your content determines whether AI engines cite you or ignore you.

AEO-Optimised
Structured to directly answer specific questions
Wins featured snippets and answer boxes
Cited in AI Overviews and voice search results
FAQ and HowTo schema accelerates extraction
Compounds — each answer builds authority
Generic Content
Written for humans, not for extraction
Rarely surfaced in AI or answer results
No structured data to guide parsers
Ranks may decline as AI search grows
No clear question-answer mapping
FAQ

Common questions

Answer Engine Optimization is the discipline of structuring content so search engines and voice assistants can extract it directly for featured snippets, People Also Ask results, answer boxes and spoken voice answers. In practice this means restating the core answer plainly near the top of a page, backing it with FAQ or HowTo schema, and organising supporting detail so it doesn't bury the direct answer a snippet algorithm is trying to pull out.

SEO is largely about earning a ranking position on a results page through relevance, authority and technical health. AEO is narrower: it's about winning the specific extracted-answer placements, snippets, PAA boxes, voice answers, that sit above or alongside the normal ranked list. A page can rank well and still lose the snippet to a competitor whose content is better structured for extraction, which is the gap AEO closes.

They share a foundation. Content that states an answer clearly and completely in a self-contained passage is exactly what both a snippet algorithm (AEO) and a language model choosing what to cite (GEO) are looking for. We treat AEO as the groundwork that also strengthens GEO, rather than running them as unrelated projects.

Yes, but only for FAQ content that's genuinely visible on the page to a normal visitor. Search engines penalise schema that describes content the user can't actually see, so we mark up real, on-page questions and answers rather than adding schema as a shortcut to a rich result.

It varies with how competitive the query is and how quickly the search engine recrawls and reindexes the page. Some answer features shift within a few weeks of a structural change; more competitive, high-volume questions can take a few months of consistent signal before a snippet or PAA placement changes hands.

It's uncommon but possible, since Google sometimes pulls a snippet from a page ranked outside the top few positions if that page answers the specific question more directly than higher-ranked pages. It's not something to rely on as a strategy, but it illustrates that snippet placement and overall ranking are related but distinct signals.
